Bamako is not even half way along the length of the Niger River yet even here it is a large body of water a kilometre or so wide. The river sustains the life on its banks including Bamako. Away from the river the landscape quickly becomes arid. Fishermen in long, fairly unstable canoes, work these waters using gill nets, and selling their catch in the city markets.
