South Africa Oudtshoorn. Ostrich farmer, Gerrie Ferreira, on his farm on the outskirts of this town which because of climatic conditions, is the ostrich-capital of the world. These birds are being bred for their skins, meat and feathers. here he examines one of his birds. Cases of avian flu H5N2 were picked up on two South African farms, and ostrich exports were stopped. Now export of the meat has resumed, but now that avian flu H5N1 is spreading, there are renewed fears, especially, since this strain of the desease has been passed to humans, with fatal results. The tags on their necks indicates that they are fully innoculated. 27/10/2005 © Rodger Bosch.
