The Old Voortrekker Raadzaal. Erected originally about 1841, and used by the Boers for the Volksraad. It was here that Henry Cloete, H.M. Commissioner, met the Boer leaders in 1843, and arranged with them the terms of submission to Great Britain. After the establishment of the Supreme Court being housed here. Walter Harding was cheif justice, and Henry Conner and H. Lushington were the Puisne Judges. Note the stone at the foot of the old Syringa tree where the Cheif Justice used to sit and take snuff. On completion (about) 1871 of the present Court House, this historic building was converted into a buctcher's shop, and was eventually pulled down to make way for the Town Hall erected on that site in 1890.
