In an effort to celebrate the legacy of South Africa’s former President Nelson Mandela, 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation urged people all over the world to join them in a bid to celebrate Mandela Day, which would be held on Mr Mandela’s birthday each year, July 18. On Mandela Day, people around the world were asked to spend 67 minutes of their time to do something that made a difference to the world around them. “Mandela Day is an annual celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and a global call to action for people to recognize their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.” In Durban (eThekwini municipality) the mayor Obed Mlaba was at the forefront of the celebration themed "Siyabonga Madiba". At 11am a police band, horse unit, and a rickshaw bus lead a march from Joe Slovo Street to Church Walk in the city centre. The deputy mayor and Mandela Day activities include a clean-up in Wentworth, south of the city. The main festival celebrations took place at the Durban City hall gardens.
