In celebration of South Africa’s resilience and maturing democracy, President Kgalema Motlanthe appeared at the Freedom Day celebrations at the Absa Stadium, Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal province on the 27 April 2009. The Freedom Day celebrations took the theme of: “Together celebrating a vibrant democracy and building a better life for all. President Motlanthe was accompanied by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Z. Pallo Jordan, Premier of KwaZulu Natal – Sibusiso Ndebele and other senior government officials. For the past 15 years, South Africa has celebrated the achievement of freedom and democracy on 27 April a day on which the first democratic elections were held in 1994. The 2009 Freedom Day celebrations present an opportunity for South Africa to pay tribute to our heroes and heroines who contributed to the fight for freedom and the building of a non-racial, non-sexist and democracy. Most importantly, the 2009 Freedom Day Celebrations took place soon after the fourth general elections where millions of South Africans have exercised their hard-won right to vote.
