Men's i-Trail 2008

On the final scramble across an airy ledge on the approach to the summit of The Sentinel (3165 metres) in the nothern Drakensberg.. On a "rights of passage" process, a group of South Africans from Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, take on the Drakensberg. The group are part of a process called i-Generation which seeks to reach a fatherless generation and vest in them identity, belonging and purpose. Fatherlessness is perhaps the most devastating long term outcome of the apartheid system which forced fathers to live apart from their wives and children. The i-Generation process culminates in the i-Trail (Initiation Trail) which sees the group summit the top of the Drakensberg.. The Drakensberg was proclaimed a World Heritage Site in 2000 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) because it is the site of the most significant concentration of rock art south of the Sahara and because as wilderness it preserves many rare plant and animal species.
