Looking Back

28 Mar 1994

'Looking Back' elicits a thoughtful and nostalgic journey through the black South African music scene of the 30s, 40s and 50s. Examined are the work of artists like The Merry Blackbirds, Dolly Rathebe, Dorothy Masuka, Alfed Herbert, the Manhattan Boys and Thoko Thomo. While racial tensions simmered and segregation prevailed, the voice of African musical culture - as embodied in the Jazz and Variety shows of 1950s Durban - grew in strength, and retained its power as a tool to inspire and uplift.
