Zanzibar is known as "the island of cloves" because they grow almost everywhere. The clove is the dried unopened bud of the tree which grows as high as fifty feet and has crimson flowers. The clove harvest lasts from July to December, and the bulk of the crop is exported to Indonesia and India.
