South African Opposition Newspapers - Unedited

1988

Vrye Weekblad was a groundbreaking progressive, anti-apartheid Afrikaans national weekly newspaper that was launched in November 1988 and forced to close in February 1994. The paper was driven into bankruptcy by the legal costs of defending its charge that South African Police General Lothar Neethling had supplied poison to security police to kill activists. Max Du Preez is the founding editor of Vrye Weekblad and interviewed in this film. This interview is part of a series of unedited interviews with South African (and some American) writers, journalists and activists made in the late ‘80s, 90s mostly on the subject of censorship and films.
