Nautical chart of the coasts of Cimbebas and Kaffraria (current-day southern West Africa and Eastern Cape of South Africa). Shows surrounding land, port cities, topography, vegetation, coastlines, islands, shoals, anchorage, and soundings. Relief shown pictorially. Includes rhumb lines, latitudinal and longitudinal lines, as well as three bar scales and a compass rose, with north oriented toward left of sheet. Descriptive notes throughout. With inset map: [Table Bay]. Decorative cartouche. Black and white engraving. Chart is 41 x 53 cm, on double sheet 47 x 59 cm. The English pilot : Part V, published by John Mount and Thomas Page in London, 1766. The English pilot was a sea-chart atlas published in several editions from 1671 to 1803. This, fifth, edition focus on the coasts of Africa and the vicinity, from the English Channel to the Strait of Gibraltar and further to the Cape of Good Hope. Bound in brown leather, with gilded spine title. Ink inscription on first (blank) page indicates provenance, listing several names, beginning with Joseph Sowler. Collation: [1], 42 pages, with 19 double leaves of double plates, including several fold-out sheets. Plates comprised of 21 nautical charts (three together on plate following page 16). Charts show surrounding land, port cities, topography, vegetation, coastlines, islands, shoals, anchorage, and soundings. Relief shown pictorially. Charts include rhumb lines, latitudinal and longitudinal lines, as well as bar scales, compass roses and descriptive notes. Extended description appears in chapters I through XVI, illustrated by woodcut profile views of coastal topography.
