In 1962, Nelson Mandela, leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation) the armed wing of the African National Congress, was convicted by a South African court of traveling outside the country without a passport and inciting workers to strike. He was sentenced to five years in prison and had begun serving his term when in 1964 he was charged by the South African with treason. At that subsequent trial he acted as his own attorney. Upon his second conviction, one that carried a life sentence, he made the following statement.
