Black and white photograph of the entrance to the temple, 1857. Luxor is the modern name of the city near the site of ancient Thebes on the east side of the Nile River. The temple was begun by the pharoh Amenhotpe III (c. 1410-1372 BC). Two statues buried to the neck in sand are of Ramses II. The obelisk to the left was also placed in the time of Ramses II.
