Miriam Wakefield, 6 years, Nigeria, ca. 1931

Black and white photograph of a young Nigerian girl, who sits in a large steel bowl, probably used as a bath. She sits on the veranda to a mission building. The caption to this image reads: "Miriam Wakefield. 6yrs. Ward of Mission since 5 months. Thrown away because she was twin." Twins were considered unlucky in Nigeria, and many twin babies were abandoned in the bush, many of whom were found and cared for by missions. This photograph was pasted into one of a series of exercise book albums created by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Ama Achara Methodist Hospital, which was run by the Primitive Methodist Missionary Society.
