Reverend Kingston, Uzuakoli, Nigeria, 1944

Black and white photograph showing Reverend P Kingston turning over the soil with a space at Uzuakoli in modern Abia state, southeast Nigeria. He stands in front of a single storey brick building and turns soil marked off by a rope barrier. The caption to this image reads: "Rev. P. Kingston Chairman turns 1st sod for Uzuakoli Memorial Church to Rev. H.L.O Williams & Alec Fenby." Reverend Herbert Lewis Octavia Williams was the first principal of the Uzuakoli Institute (the Methodist College after 1931) which was founded by the Church Missionary Society in 1923. This photograph was pasted into one of a series of exercise book albums created by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Ama Achara Methodist Hospital, a medical facility run by the Methodist Missionary Society.
