Head porterage, crossing stream, Nigeria, ca. 1924

Black and white photograph showing a group of Nigerian men, women and children crossing a river, probably in Abia state, southeast Nigeria. Three women carry baskets with goods on the top of their heads. Two of the women are bare-chested with wraps around their waists, whilst another woman wears a shawl and wrap. A young man stands in the water with four young children, one of whom is carried on a sibling's back. The caption to this image reads: "Head porterage. Crossing stream." This photograph was pasted into one of a series of exercise book albums created by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Ama Achara Methodist Hospital.
