Ekoya with Twins, Nigeria, ca. 1936

Black and white photograph showing a Nigerian nurse, Ekoya, at the Ama Achara hospital run by the Methodist Missionary Society in southeast Nigeria. She stands in front of a hospital door carrying two male twins in her arms. The hospital at Ama Achara often cared for abandoned twin babies, who were considered unlucky in traditional Nigerian culture. This photograph was pasted into one of a series of exercise book albums created by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Ama Achara Methodist Hospital.
