Typical ulcer cases, Nigeria, ca. 1925

Black and white photograph showing a Nigerian woman and boy at Ama Achara hospital, a facility run by the Primitive Methodist Missionary Society in southeast Nigeria. Both woman and boy are extremely thin, and the woman's breasts are sunken. The boy is particularly emaciated and wears a ragged tunic. The woman has sores on her leg, and her son has sores on his arms and shoulder. The pair carry objects, which look to be birds that have been hunted. Staff or patients from the Ama Achara hospital can be seen through the hospital window. The caption to this image reads: "Typical Ulcer cases." This photograph was pasted into one of a series of exercise book albums created by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Ama Achara Methodist Hospital.
