Potato race, Nigeria, 1932

Black and white photograph printed onto a postcard showing a "potato race" at a Christmas sports day held at the leper colony run by the Primitive Methodist Missionary Society in Uzuakoli, southeast Nigeria. The event appears to be for women and children. Eight contestants stand on a starting line, holding a potato in one hand. Two referees stand by the starting line. Painted barrels from the previous barrel race can be seen lying on the ground. This photograph was pasted into one of a series of exercise book albums created by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Ama Achara Methodist Hospital, also run by the Primitive Methodist Missionary Society.
