Black and white photograph showing a tug of war match at Uzuakoli Institute on its sports day in June 1923. The picture shows a tug of war match between two groups of African young men. Two male European missionaries stand at either side of the rope to referee. A group of young Nigerian adolescents watches the match. The Uzuakoli Institute was run by the Church Missionary Society (C.M.S), and was opened in 1923. It was later to be known as the Methodist College. This image comes from a photograph collection kept by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Methodist Hospital run by the Primitive Methodist Missionary Society at Ama Achara, southeast Nigeria, from 1921 to 1944.
