Black and white lantern slide of Reverend Esien Esien (Essien) Ukpabio of Adiabo, a town on the Calabar River. In 1853, Esien Esien Ukpabio was the first Christian convert to be baptised publically in the King's Yard at Creek Town. In 1872, he was ordained to the ministry, making him the first native pastor in Calabar. Reverend Ukpabio wears a European style suit with a fob watch, and his wife and children appear in smart, European attire. This slide comes from a set on mission, culture and industry in Calabar, southeast Nigeria generated by the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church of Scotland (which was incorporated with the Church of Scotland in 1929.)
