Mary Slessor and infants, Nigeria, ca. 1910

Black and white photograph printed on a postcard showing the Calabar missionary, Mary Slessor (1848-1915) with two of her infant charges, dressed in smocks. The group stands in front of iron railings. Mary Slessor - a heroine of missionary work in Africa - worked for the Calabar Mission of the United Presbyterian Church from 1876 to her death in 1915. Slessor was famed for her work in rescuing twins from abandonment and fighting against inter-tribal warfare and customs such as human sacrifice and poison ordeals. This image comes from a photograph collection kept by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Methodist Hospital run by the Methodist Missionary Society at Ama Achara, southeast Nigeria, from 1921 to 1944. Photographic material on Mary Slessor was sent to Emily Godfrey by a Mrs McCullough.
