Photograph of a derelict mission house at Cape Maclear. The building is clay built and is located at the foot of a hillside. Cape Maclear is a town in the Mangochi District of Malawi's Southern Region, it was named after the astronomer and friend of David Livingstone, Thomas Maclear. This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
