"Chiradzulo[Chiradzulu]. Cleland's old house. Chir: Mountains in background". Exterior view showing a large thatched building with mud walls. The house was originally build by Robert Cleland (1857-1890) b. Coatbridge, d. Blantyre [Malawi]. Studied Latin, Greek and Engineering. Arrived in Nyasaland in 1887 and established a mission at Chirazulo where he laboured alone for three years. The original intent had been to establish a mission a Mlanje but the local chief, Chikumbu, delayed this until 1890 due to a dispute over slaves who had sought sanctuary in Blantyre. He died, unmarried, of fever in Blantyre, 1890, and was the first member of the Church of Scotland Young Men’s Guild to die in a mission field.
