Man with Mbira, Malawi, ca. 1914-1918

Black and white lantern slide showing a man with a musical instrument, possibly a thumb piano or mbira, which is amplified by a round gourd, called a deze. The man wears a shirt and a wrap around his waist. A pen can be seen behind his ear. This slide comes from a set on the activities of the King’s African Rifles battalions in Nyasaland. It was originally held by the Church of Scotland, and generated by J.W MacKay.
