Photograph of the Scottish missionaries Dr Robert Laws and Dr Alexander Hetherwick. Dr Alexander Hetherwick (1860-1939) was ordained for service with the Blantyre mission in Malawi in 1885. Along with Robert Laws he was one the main architects of the Church of Central Africa Presbytery which was inaugurated in 1924. This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
