"Distant view of African village." View of thatched roofs and scrub surrounding village dwellings. Part of an album of photographs relating to the mission at Blantyre, which was established in 1876 in the Shire Highlands of Southern Nyasaland [Malawi] by Henry Henderson (1843-1891). The mission excelled in medical and education provision and encouraged the commercialisation of the area through opening trade routes and the cultivation of tobacco, and other cash crops.
