Group of young children from Mwenza, Malawi, ca. 1894-1904

Group photograph of young children from Mwenza, "Slave children from Mwenza". The children are arranged in two rows and all are dressed in white gowns. Mwenza is located in northern Malawi. This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
