Letter from Shirley Graham Du Bois to Bernard Jaffe

1961

Jaffe can write to the Du Boises courtesy the President's office: "This is only one example of the cheerful eagerness shown here to make us comfortable and happy." Sweeping government changes and expected arrival of the Queen: "The people are going about it with joyful enthusiasm because the broader streets, overhead lighting, new buildings and parkways will all be here after the Queen has come and gone! A huge square is being built similar to the great squares of Moscow and Peking... It will be called the 'Black Star Square!'" A house is being remodeled for Du Bois with servant's cottage and a large library, modern bathroom, and more. Has met the "charming" Chinese ambassador and his wife; studying French.
