In the arid sub-Saharan country of the Northern Cameroon, water is scarce commodity. Sometimes there is not enough to drink, far less to wash with. This Kirdi youngster drinking from a gourd is clad only in a discarded plastic werapper. The Republic of the Cameroon is today one of the most active African states in implementing plans for both preventive and curative medicine. The government with the help of UNICEF is establishing a chain of 'demonstrative zones' in different climatic areas of the country, each comprehensive rural health service. While immediate attention has been focused on the areas of dense population in the humid and well-watered south, the more arid, sparsely populated north is not being overlooked. Here, with only one government doctor for every 77,000 people, lack of water is a chief obstacle to better health. Credit UNICEF photo by Matheson. ICEF Series 5885-5894.
