Manse, Kikuyu, Kenya, ca.1911

“From the Church we still ascend, passing on the right hand side the football field, till we come to the Manse with it’s beautiful garden, at the summit of the hill. In the garden you will find roses, carnations, sweet peas, stocks, flocks and other flowers while we are well supplied with cauliflowers, cabbages, potatoes an all our home vegetables.” Exterior view of the manse, where Mr J.W. Arthur lived. It is a large single story building with a verandah running around two sides of the building. A well cultivated garden dominates the foreground. ❧ "This Lecture was prepared by Dr J.W. Arthur in October 1911 on his voyage to Mombasa. The set of slides is the gift to the Kikuyu Mission of the Young Peoples Meeting at the Burgh Hall, Hillhead, of which he was for many years a member." A green folder marked 'Kikuyu' and containing lecture notes and relevant photographs to accompany lantern slides.
