Troops crossing river, Zambezia province, Mozambique, 23-29 July 1918

1918

“After the battle of Namirrue the Germans surrendered a hospital & I was sent by the S.M.O. (seen below) to evacuate it. We had 45 badly wounded carried by porters to go 6 days march.” Landscape view showing troops from a column crossing a ford. One of the figures in the middle is the Senior Medical/Military Officer. The battle of Namirrue was fought on the 22 July 1918 with heavy losses sustained by the king’s African Rifles. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
