Dressing carriers, Zambezia province, Mozambique, 23-29 July 1918

1918

“After the battle of Namirrue the Germans surrendered a hospital & I was sent by the S.M.O. (seen below) to evacuate it. We had 45 badly wounded carried by porters to go 6 days march. Here are our German friends helping with dressing when the days march was done.” Exterior view showing patients and dressers some of whom are German prisoners. The battle of Namirrue took place on 22 July 1918 and saw heavy fighting between the King’s African Rifles of the Fitzcol, the column commanded by Lt. Col. Fitzgerald, and the Schutztruppe, the German forces, in Portuguese East Africa. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
