Nyamwezi porters from Tanzania, Zambezia, Mozambique, July 1918

1918

“Wanyamwezi’s [Nyamwezi] from German East – jolly good fellows.” Group portrait of members of the Carrier Corps from German East Africa [Tanzania], the Nyamwezi people, who supported the British columns during the campaign in Portuguese East Africa. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
