First six baptisms, Kikuyu, Kenya, 1908

"On Dr.Ruffelle' Scott's deathbed his old boy Karanja was the first of our converts to be baptised his was followed on Xmas day 1908 by the first public baptisms of 6 young men. It was a great day of rejoicing and thankfulness to God. In the beginning of 1907 there were no baptised boys, and no catechumens, - to-day in 1911 there is a young native Church of some 25 young men and 4 young women who have been baptised, and a Catechumenate class at Kikuyu & Kenia, of some 60 or 70 young men and women in preparation for baptism. We marvel to-day when we think of what the work was in 1907, and what it is to-day, and we acknowledge that all the wonderful blessing is from the Lord, whose work it is." Group portrait of six young indigenous men after being baptised. ❧ "This Lecture was prepared by Dr J.W. Arthur in October 1911 on his voyage to Mombasa. The set of slides is the gift to the Kikuyu Mission of the Young Peoples Meeting at the Burgh Hall, Hillhead, of which he was for many years a member." A green folder marked 'Kikuyu' and containing lecture notes and relevant photographs to accompany lantern slides.
