Genadendal Mountain, Genadendal, South Africa, 1930

1930

"Der Gnadenthaler Berg. Blick hinter der Werf." ("The Genadendal Mountain. View behind the mission premises."). The picture shows a path. On the path two children and a man of African origin. The man carries two buckets on a long stick. On the left trees. In the background is a forest and a mountain. Written on the card board: "Br. Baudert 1930." ("Br[other] Baudert 1930."). The word "Werf" is a term taken from Afrikaans. -- The picture was probably taken by Samuel Baudert (1879-1956), born as son of the missionary Samuel Baudert in South Africa. He was the mission director of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine from 1924 to 1927 and since 1929 their bishop. It might also be possible that the picture was taken by Eugen Theodor Baudert (1876-1953) who worked as a lecturer at the theological seminar in Mvenyane.
