"Geschw. Emil Bachmann auf der Reise." ("Brethren Emil Bachmann on a trip."). In the foreground Missionary Emil Bachmann seated on a stool in front of a tent, in front of him three African men sitting on the ground, one of them further to the right. Bachmann's wife is sitting behind her husband in the tent with a toddler on her lap. In the background trees and half of a native hut on the right. Photograph was retouched, especially Bachmann and both Africans on the left, as well as some of the equipment. -- The picture was probably taken during Bachmann's stay in Nyasa between 1908 and 1916. -- Emil Karl Bachmann (1875-1940) and his wife Elisabeth Marie Bachmann (1885-?) were missionaries of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine from 1908-1916. During that time they stayed in Isoko (1908-1910), Rutenganio (1910), Mwaja (1910-1912) and Rungwe (1912-1916). For the following three years they were British prisoners of war. After they were released, they became missionaries of the Berlin Mission.
