Native Hut, Tumutumu, Kenya, September 1926

1926

"A Native Hut". Exterior view of a thatched hut. Tumutumu was established in 1908 by Rev. Henry Scott and Dr. John Arthur and is situated in the Central Highlands of Kenya, 130km north of Nairobi. The mission was set up as a clinic but soon expanded to include a school and church serving the Kikuyu population indigenous to the region. The Tumutumu mission station, an arm of the Kikuyu Mission, opened in the Central Highlands of Kenya in 1909. The Kikuyu Mission had been founded on a temporary site by the Imperial British East Africa Company in 1891, before moving to Kikuyu territory in 1898, under the Rev. Thomas Watson.
