In 1914 he left the mission to work as a constructor and planter in Arusha. After the First World War he came back to the mission in 1926 and stayed until 1940. He worked as a builder in Shigatini, Nkoaranga and Makumira. After the death of his first wife, Erna Scharmann, he married the missionary sister Hanna Schliemann in 1931.
