Missionary sister teaching girls, Toamasina, Madagascar, ca.1900-1930

"TAMATAVE Lecon de Catechisme aux petites filles Malgaches se preparant au bapteme" ("Lesson of Catechism to the small Malagasy girls preparing them for baptism"). In a courtyard, a missionary sister uses large pictures on an easel to teach a group of twenty indigenous girls all dressed in white. In the background the buildings surrounding the courtyard are visible. Postcard issued by the "Collection de L'oeuvre de la Sainte Enfance - 44, rue du Cherche-Midi - Paris (6e)." The back of the postcard is blank and contains information about the publisher: "L'Oeuvre de la Saint-Enfance baptise chaque annee pres de 500.000 petits infideles. Elle en eleve pres de 700.000" ("The Work of Saint-Childhood baptizes each year nearly 500,000 indigenous children. It brings up nearly some 700,000").
