Woman with sewing-machine, Gonja, Tanzania, ca. 1927-1938

"Eine Nähmaschine in Gonja (keine Seltenheit mehr)" ("A sewing-machine in Gonja (no longer a rarity)"). A sewing woman sitting on a chair in front of a traditional round house made from plant fiber. Mainly children as spectators. In the left back corner a rectangular house thatched with plant fiber and banana plants. Cf. isolate photo no. 96 (24.0 x 18.0), enlarged reproduction. -- Wilhelm Guth (1888-1980), from Zeiskam in the Rhineland Palatinate, studied commerce before joining the Leipzig Mission as a pastor. He served in Gonja (southern Pare) from 1913 to 1917 and from 1927 to 1938. He left a large number of photographs, mostly taken by himself but including some by members of his family or fellow missionaries.
