“3/3 KAR. HQ. and the camp. I had a topping time here, getting opportunities to help Mr Butcher, the native’s chaplain, in his work. We had a school daily in the mornings, for native soldiers, and services every evening.” Exterior view of the entrance to the camp with a signpost and indigenous soldiers standing along a path. The Rev. H J Butcher worked with the Church Mission Society (CMS) in German East Africa. ❧ The image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in German East Africa and Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During this time he would meet Dr John W Arthur which in turn would lead to his missionary work at Chogoria in Kenya.
