German wreck, Rufiji River, Tanzania, July 1917

1917

“Our men bathing near the Koenig.” Exterior view showing bathers in the Rufiji delta and the wreck of the SMS Königsberg (1905-1915) which was scuttled there by its German crew on 11 July 1915 after being blockaded in the river since October of the previous year. ❧ The image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in German East Africa and Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During this time he would meet Dr John W Arthur which in turn would lead to his missionary work at Chogoria in Kenya.
