Battery mules on a river bank, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, April-July 1918

1918

“The Indian battery mules having a roll on a river bank.” Landscape view showing a number of mules and men on a sandy riverbank. The battery was either part of the Rose column or Fitzgerald Column on military manoeuvres in Portuguese East Africa. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
