European and African children in front of mission house, Tanzania, ca.1905-1907

Group portrait of three European and seven African children sitting in a meadow in front of the mission house of Nkoaranga. The children of missionary Albert Fokken are among them. Albert Fokken (1885-1963), from East Friesland, served the Leipzig Mission as a craftsman in Arusha from 1909 to 1911. Afterwards he stayed for one year in Shira before moving to Marangu in 1912. In 1914 he left the mission to work as a constructor and planter in Arusha. After the First World War he came back to the mission in 1926 and stayed until 1940. He worked as a builder in Shigatini, Nkoaranga and Makumira. After the death of his first wife, Erna Scharmann, he married the missionary sister Hanna Schliemann in 1931.
