Carriers crossing a stream, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, August 1918

1918

“The crush of porters at a stream.” Crowd scene showing carriers converging on a stream where some stop to drink. Capt. Irvine was medical officer caring, primarily, for the ammunition carriers. The column they supported consisted of the 4/4 KAR and a Nigerian Brigade and after several months trailing German forces the column was returning north. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
