“So we got on with the hospital. These are wards with P.E.A. natives in front.” Exterior view showing hospital wards being constructed from bamboo and thatch by indigenous labour. The wards are part of the carrier clearing hospital established by Capt. Irvine at Ancuabe, about sixty miles inland from Port Amelia. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
