Nigerian Headman, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, August 1918

1918

“A Nigerian Headman.” Portrait of a man carrying two satchels and wearing a cloth cap. He is associated with a military column consisting of KAR and Nigerian Brigade troops, as well as men from the Carrier Corps, who were trailing German forces in Portuguese East Africa. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
