“Nyirgu - a Mugikuyu, Hospital head boy. He doesn’t take any risks over his trousers slipping down. Does he?” Portrait of an indigenous man in army uniform. Nyirgu is a hospital assistant from British East Africa [Kenya] and of the Kikuyu people he would have trained at a mission hospital possibly at the Kikuyu mission. ❧ The image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in German East Africa and Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During this time he would meet Dr John W Arthur which in turn would lead to his missionary work at Chogoria in Kenya.
