Indigenous huts and Hollan, Rungwe, Tanzania, ca. 1903-1916

"Eingebornen-Wohnhütte (links) u. Vorratsraum (rechts). Br. Holland [=Hollan]." ("A native's hut (on the left) a[nd] storeroom (on the right). Br[other] Hollan[ ]."). A big, round, thatched hut built from bamboo canes in the foreground on the left. Two smaller huts farther to the back on the right with a tree in front under which seven Africans are sitting. Brother Hollan is standing next to them on the very right of the picture. Imprinted on the image: "1635.". Paul Oswald Hollan (1877-unknown) was a missionary of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine. He served as a joiner from 1903 to 1916 in Rungwe until his internment in 1916. He returned to Germany in 1919. In 1909 he had married Augusta Gertrud(e), née Zöllner (1883-unknown).
