Crossing the Lurio River, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, 23 June 1918

1918

“Crossing the Lurio R.” Landscape showing the Lurio River on which is a raft loaded with men. There are British officers and men from the Indian Army, probably the 22nd Derajat Mountain Battery, and they are part of the 4/4 KAR column in Portuguese East Africa. ❧ This image is from an album chronicling the war time experiences of Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) in Portuguese East Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps. During the war he met with missionaries in East Africa which in turn lead to him joining the mission at Tumutumu and then establishing the mission at Chogoria, both in Kenya.
